On day 2 of COP29, the UK’s prime minister announced a new national climate target – to reduce national emissions by 81% by 2035 (against 1990 levels).
As part of its international obligations under the Paris Agreement, the UK must submit a new emissions reduction target every five years, known as “nationally determined contributions” (NDCs).
The UK’s existing NDC was a 68% emission reduction by 2030, making this a more ambitious new target.
