Inside the Factory: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at The Sweet People

News . 13th March 2025

Last week, BPMA distributor members and education programme learners embarked on a journey into the heart of confectionery excellence, courtesy of The Sweet People. The immersive factory visit, integral to the BPMA’s Education Platform course, offered attendees a glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship behind some of the UK’s finest sweets and chocolates.

The BPMA set the stage with a session introduction and industry update, laying the groundwork for the day’s explorations.

Post-lunch, the confectionery adventure began. Attendees were treated to an exclusive tour of not one but two distinct facilities, each showcasing The Sweet People’s dedication to in-house production.

Every step—from design and assembly to printing, finishing, packing, and distribution—is meticulously executed under one roof. The comprehensive approach ensures stringent quality control and the flexibility to accommodate a vast array of order sizes.

Nearby, the group visited the second facility. This facility buzzes with activity, as a dedicated team moulds, crafts, and packages an impressive array of chocolates daily. Staff demonstrated intricate processes and branding techniques and visitors also donned aprons to craft their own delectable chocolates, adding a personal touch to the experience.

Sustainability emerged as a central theme throughout the visit. The Sweet People’s commitment to eco-friendly practices is evident in their packaging innovations. By using Delipac board, the company offers a fully compostable and biodegradable eco-range. Replacing bubble wrap with recyclable paper padding and providing reusable tins as sustainable alternatives to single-use packaging helps distributor clients on their own sustainability journey. The Sweet People’s partnership with Climate Wise underscores dedication to an eco-friendly future, boasting impressive figures like 22,500 trees planted and 310.5 tonnes of carbon offset to date.

More than just a tour; the day was an inspiring journey into the art and science of confectionery, highlighting The Sweet People’s unwavering commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability. Sarah Harris from Merchandise Ltd said: “I really enjoy seeing the supplier side of things; it helps better my knowledge and helps being able to explain to clients how things work and why they are the way they are.”
