Under the incoming Simpler Recycling regulation (applicable in England only), every household and workplace across England will be obliged to separate waste streams in accordance with the following:
- dry recyclable materials – plastic, metal, glass, paper and card*
*you may need to separate paper and card from other dry recyclables (plastic, metal and glass), unless your waste collector collects them together. You should discuss how your dry recyclable waste will be collected with your chosen waste collector. - food waste
- garden waste (only applicable to business where workplaces are generating garden waste)
- black bin waste (residual waste)
The goal of these changes is to make recycling easier, reduce confusion and thereby improve recycling rates in the UK.
Key Dates for Business
- By 31 March 2025, all workplaces in England with 10 or more full time employees must recycle the relevant waste streams mentioned above.
- By 31st March 2027, Micro-firms (workplaces with fewer than 10 full time employees) must recycle the relevant waste streams.
