The UK government has confirmed that they intend to strengthen the existing UK Timber Regulation (UKTR) with a new deforestation policy. Publication of the new legislation is currently expected in 2027.
It has been confirmed that the policy will apply to businesses with an annual turnover greater than £1 million, using the following forest risk commodities:
- wood
- cattle
- cocoa
- coffee
- palm oil
- rubber
- soy
- derived products (to be confirmed), such as chocolate and furniture
To support and protect UK businesses, the government aims to develop this policy to be consistent with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), including the due diligence requirements.
The EUDR will continue to apply in Northern Ireland, securing NI’s access into the EU single market. This means UK businesses operating within the NI market must comply with EUDR.
Further information and guidance is expected to be issued in 2027.
